I've been told conflicting info by a few companies that I have been looking into for model building software. I was told Trios you have to buy a mailbox for them to convert scans, but by another company that it is stl.. I was told Itero is stl, but by the other company that Itero they can only be done by their company. Which is true??? Also, what is the best intraoral scanner to recommend? I have drs demoing the 3Def and I don't think that is the answer...

ITero scans must go through Align tech headquarters in Costa Rica for scans done in North America. Unless things have changed it takes a few days for them to decrypt and edit the scan data. The doctor pays per scan fee or buys yearly data plan. ITero will want you as a lab to become a partner and pay a one time fee for this. It ranges from $1500-5000 depending on what tier of partnership you want/need. If the doc is computer savvy they can send you the stl file without becoming a partner.

Trios scans are not stl and can be loaded into newer versions of exocad without modifying the software. If the trios owner buys the extra module they can convert the scans to stl. If not you will need an 'inbox' plus a dental designer license to convert.$$$$$$$
Tru Def is encrypted file type as well and must go to 3M for decryption and cleanup and then go to a margin marking lab or you can become one yourself. Not sure about the fees to do this?? There are also data plans that must be purchased by the scanner user. I have one to demo at my lab, we will be testing it when I get back next week.
Planscan renders stl files immediately after scanning, there is no waiting. Care stream is similar. I am trying to get a demo scanner to try. There are some carestream users here that may chime in.

    Dear all,
I would like to have your advices about other open - structured brand-names of IO scanners, such as: Condor and Densys3D.
    Looking forward to your feedback.

For me planscan looked better then MHT but still few steps away from Trios... :/ Though pretty easy to operate.

    Trios are OK.
    MHT is slow as f*ck.
Cerec needs to be more open for the people....
What about Condor? In IDS Collogne it wasn't finished at 100% and had some issues... maybe now it is running smooth and sound.
What about data quality? resolution and whole volume distortion? Anybody selling-working with them? condor.jpg

I haven't seen it, but I have seen some scans from the 3500. It is a solid scanner that puts out open stl format scan files. What's not to like besides the tech support? That is the only thing bad I have heard about Carestream.

I was told that a trios inbox for my version of exocad would be $2400 :(

Why does it matter what version of exocad you have?

    $2400 for what exactly?
One year term to accept any closed files from 3shape trios using their portal-thingy?
    Sounds sucky to me.

I am sure the moment you pay that someone would offer a cheaper solution by de-encryption or other means? Lol

Or 3shape decides to go fully open

we have 3shape....we convert / decrypt for others....and do all our designs in Exocad...
So much you can fix with exocad

the problem with trios .dcm files are that you cant directly convert them in dental shaper, you need to run them through 3shape and then they output another .dcm

DMC are you saying that a version of exocad you sell would come with that inbox included?

The "Inbox" or Trios comunicate you buy from 3shape......than after one year you pay for each year.
But there is also another way (i did not test it ) direkt lab conection....so maybe no trios inbox....you could get the scan file´s from the trios scan pc as Folder. In the folder are all files you need for exocad.

When you use a Trios ready lab ( Trios comunicate ) all files go into a zip. you can open the zip but its just a bunch off numbers...so you need to convert via Inbox again into a folder....
